This historic Bavarian city opened wide its jaws in one gigantic yawn today as it contemplated the prospect of seven successive speeches by Chancellor Adolf Hitler and watched 600,000 persons, whipped into a hysteria of frenzied enthusiasm, ring up the curtain on the fourth congress of the National Socialist Party.
As train after train poured forth its human cargo, high party officials gathered in the city hall tonight to drink in the golden words of wisdom which issued from the glib mouth of the Reichsfuehrer.
Turning their eyes earthward in a bravado-filled effort to ignore leaden clouds of economic disaster, which momentarily threatened to smother Germany in a deluge of ruin, the Nazi cohorts comforted themselves with the thought that their leader will address them seven times in seven days.
Unity was the watchword of the gathering, which still carried in its mind’s eye a graphic picture of what had happened on June 30 to certain party leaders who had stammered over that five-letter word, while it conjectured over what may yet happen to the ten per cent. of “nein” voters in the recent plebiscite.
