An appeal to American Jews to help the German-Jewish refugees was made here by James G. McDonald, High Commissioner of the League of Nations for Jewish and other refugees, addressing yesterday’s session of the Order Brith Sholom convention.
“It is not enough to be good Zionists,” Commissioner McDonald said. “It is absolutely necessary that the Jewish people in Germany should be aided. You cannot afford to let them become disorganized, demoralized, dishearted and weakened. They have become in a sense the advance guard of the Jews throughout the world.”
A $5,000 check for Palestine was presented yesterday by Judge William M. Lewis, grand master of the Order, to Mendel M. Fisher, campaign director of the Jewish National Fund. The total contributed thus far by the Order toward the Palestine campaign this year was announced as $12,500.
The annual report of the Order, read by Judge Lewis, shows a steadily increasing membership, particularly among young American-born Jews. The Order is now 100 per cent solvent.
The convention paid special honor to the memory of Dr. Shmarya Levin, the late Zionist leader who died recently in Palestine.
