Dr. Cyril Garbett, Archbishop of York, writing in the current issue of his diccesan organ, yesterday asserted that “justifiable anger” has been aroused not only by terrorism in Palestine, but by the “reckless and unscrupulous support” given the extremists by Jews in America and elsewhere. Insisting that the situation in Palestine will be aggravated by a delay in announcing a solution of the problem, he demanded that the government should proclaim its decision and enforce it “regardless of threats and violence.”
“Those who, like myself, look upon anti-Semitism as a sin, are deeply grieved and disappointed over the failure of the Jews to have taken a stronger line against the terrorists,” Dr. Garbett stated. “Occasionally they have issued condemnations of their outrages, but too often these have been qualified by excuses on the ground that provocation has been caused by the British Government.
“All Christians must be deeply grieved at the continued bloodshed in the land so sacred to us all,” he added, stating that there is growing indignation against the outrages against British soldiers “and the foul lies launched against them and this country by world-wide Jewish propaganda.”
