Eduardo Araujo, Radical member of the Argentine parliament, will fly to Washington tomorrow with a project of creating a central inter-American coordinating bureau for receiving and re-routing European refugees among the American nations. “This is a pressing problem and it is the duty of the democracies to solve it,” he said today.
While in Washington, the Argentine deputy will make an eleventh-hour move to save the 86 German-Jewish refugees aboard the “tragedy ship” Cabo de Hornos from being delivered back to Spain. The steamer, whose passengers have been wandering for over ten months without being admitted anywhere, is due to reach Trinidad on November 18 on its way to Spain from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay where the refugees were not permitted to land. Their forced return to Spain will deliver them into the hands of the Gestapo which will transport them to concentration camps in Germany.
