Assemblyman Leonard Silverman, Manhattan Democrat, said he introduced last week in the State Legislature a bill to exclude Saturdays as registration days throughout the state. The existing election law specifically excludes Sundays as registration days but also specifically includes Saturdays for voter registration. During the 1971 session, Silverman introduced a bill, which became law, which excluded Saturdays and Sundays as election days throughout the state. Silverman said his new bill embodied the principle that the same equality should apply to registration days as now applies to election days. In a memorandum with the bill, Silverman said there are several counties which limit registration to two Saturdays, thereby severely reducing opportunities for observant Jews to register.
