George Bright, 35-year-old engineer, was acquitted yesterday in his second trial on charges of dynamiting the Atlanta Jewish Temple. An all-male jury reached the verdict after two hours of deliberation. Bright’s first trial on charges of blasting the synagogue last October 12 ended in a mistrial when the jury became deadlocked.
Superior Judge J.C. Tanksley heard the jury’s decision and promptly sentenced Bright’s attorney, Reuben Garland, to 40 days in jail for what the judge called “prejudicial remarks” during the trial. Bright said he had never had any doubt about the outcome of the trial but he protested the sentencing of his attorney. Four other persons accused in the bombing are awaiting setting of trial dates.
