The livelihood of more than 1,000 Jewish physicians employed by the State maintained – and – controlled sick benefit insurance companies was imperilled today by a social reform bill proposed by the Austrian government. The measure calls for the cancellation of all existing contracts with doctors employed by the sick fund panels and provides for re-engagement only after a process of “selection.”
In view of the dictatorial nature of the Austrian government, it is certain that the bill will be adopted and a large number of Jewish professionals deprived of all means of earning a living.
HUNDREDS DISMISSED
Recent experiences of Jewish employes of the Austrian government coupled with the dismissal of large numbers of Jewish workers from State and federal employ have aroused concern among the threatened Jewish doctors.
Where Jewish professionals were dismissed by the government, applications were invited in every case from “Aryans” and prospective employes were asked to give their religion and their family history.
Hundreds of Jewish employes have been dismissed in recent months on various pretexts and the Austrian officials openly stated that most, if not all, Jews in government and semi-government employ would be dismissed.
