A dinner in honor of the tenth anniversary of the Chalutz, pioneer movement in Palestine, was given Thursday night by Avukah, the American Student Zionist Federation, at the Park Plaza Hotel. Samuel Blumenfield, President of the New York Chapter of Avukah, who presided: David Bloch, former Mayor of Tel Aviv: Max Rhoade, National President of Avukah: and Rev. John Haynes Holmes, were the speakers.
Mr. Bloch, in the course of his address, pointed out that in the Chalutz movement in Palestine there was a richer creative opportunity for young Jews than existed anywhere else in the world.
Dr. Holmes, whose recent visit to Palestine in connection with the Straus Health Center, has aroused great interest among Jews and non-Jews, in the cause of his remarks, called the pioneers in Palestine a generation of martyrs. Martyrs, he went on to explain, do not always die for their cause. Sometimes they live through unbelievable hardships and self-denial and privation, to achieve it. This the Chalutzim in Palestine are doing today.
