Bernard Berenson, scholar, philosopher and one of the world’s leading art critics, died at his estate near here today at the age of 94. He was considered the world’s foremost authority on the art of the Italian Renaissance.
Born in Lithuania, Berenson came to the United States at the age of 10. He graduated Harvard in 1887 and left immediately there after for Europe, where he spent most of his life. He willed his 40-room villa, I Tatti, to Harvard University for use as a center for American scholars abroad.
