The twenty-five years of Zionist service rendered by Elihu D. Stone, founder of the New England Zionist Region, will be commemorated by the establishment of a $10,000 afforestation project in Palestine, bearing his name, it was announced last night at a dinner in his honor under the auspices of the Kadimah Club.
Mr. Stone, national vice president of the Zionist Organization of America and president of the New England region thirteen years, received at the dinner the tributes of Morris Rothenberg, president and Louis Lipsky, honorary president of the Z.O.A.; Eldar Markson, Boston chairman of the Jewish National Fund; Robert Silverman and Mendel N. Fisher, campaign directors of the United Palestine Appeal and Rabbi H. H. Rubenovitz of Temple Mishkan Tefilah.
Twenty per cent of the necessary $10,000 was pledged by Mr. Mark-son. A number of messages of greeting were received from points throughout the country and Palestine.
It was recalled by speakers that Mr. Stone was largely instrumental in securing passage of the Congressional resolution favoring the Jewish homeland. He visited Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, then chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and convinced him of the necessity and propriety of the resolution, which was passed jointly by the Senate and House.
