Britain will resume the shipment of arms to the Arabs now that the U.N. Security Council has lifted its embargo on arms supplies to the Middle East, a Foreign Office spokesman announced here today.
He declared that for the tine being arms will be supplied to Egypt, Iraq and; Transjordan with whom Britain had commitments for arms prior to the embargo declaration. These transactions, he stressed, will be between the Arab states and British commercial firms. Diplomatic observers here considered that his announcement did not rule out future sales to the Arabs, but merely pointed out that past commitments would be honored first.
(In Washington, the State Department today described as “strictly untrue” a report in a New York newspaper that American arms shipments will soon go to several Arab nations, notably Egypt. A Department spokesman said that the Department had carefully checked the report before denying it.)
