The British Government has the “fullest sympathy” with the anxiety aroused by the current reports of trials of Jews in Rumania, Foreign Undersecretary Anthony Nutting said today in the House of Commons.

His statement was made in reply to a question by Hector McNeil, Laborite, on what steps had been taken to insure fulfillment of the Rumanian peace treaty which, he charged, had been violated by the Rumanian mass trials. He asked that the British mission in Rumania investigate the matter and that the government keep Parliament informed of developments.

Mr. Nutting “replied that the British Government would continue to make inquiries about the arrests and trials but that since the trials had been held in secrecy the task was difficult. He said because of the secret aspects of the trials the British Government was “unable to make any comment or representation regarding the reported charges or sentences imposed.”

The Rumanian Government, he continued, “is fully aware that successive British Governments have expressed abhorrence of all forms of persecution.” He pledged to keep the House informed of the results of its inquiries to the Rumanian Government.
