A spokesman for the American delegation to the United Nations today confirmed that Secretary of State George C. Marshall conferred “quite lengthily” with British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin on the Palestine issue this week-end in London.
At the same time, a British source admitted indirectly that the British have been encouraged by the Anglo-American conversations and are ready to go ahead with their resolution, which is supported jointly by China, providing for the imposition of sanctions against Israel if the Jews refuse to withdraw from the positions they captured during the recent Negev fighting.
A British spokesman here asserted that the situation in Palestine continues to remain serious, and cited reports received at the Palais de Chaillot to back up his statement. Stressing that U.N. Security Council action was now essential, the British representative expressed doubts that–despite hints to this effect–the Russians would veto an anti-Israeli sanctions resolution.
It is understood here that Britain is going ahead with her “get-tough” attitude on Palestine. British delegates believe that the Palestine case will come up on the Political Committee’s agenda early next week.
