Dr. Leslie Burgin, parliamentary secretary to the Board of Trade, was reported here to have shown deep interest when informed there is no regular British passenger service to Palestine. Colonel Kisch, who interviewed the Briton during a recent visit to England, gave the report in a speech at a meeting of the managing committee of the Palestine British Trade Association.
Colonel Kisch said he told Dr. Burgin that passenger lines flying the flags of several European countries and the United States had shown great enterprise in seizing the opportunities afforded by the opening of the Haifa port and the growing immigration and tourist traffic to Palestine, while British shipping companies had made no practical move in the matter and, in consequence, were losing their position in the eastern Mediterranean.
The speaker also declared he had submitted information to Dr. Burgin relative to the handicap placed on the Jaffa citrus industry as a result of the exclusion of Palestine from imperial preference.
