Campaign Against Women Bus Drivers

The Committee for the Sanctity of Israel, a group of Orthodox Jews, warned the Egged bus cooperative that it would blockade streets to religious suburbs and sections of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to prevent entry of buses driven by women and would seek legal permission to operate its own buses driven by men. Their warning was issued following the bus cooperative’s announcement that it would consider training women to replace men drivers during emergencies. The Committee said that having women drivers of buses would violate religious law and tradition in that women are not permitted to be in charge of public vehicles carrying men.
