Lester B. Pearson, Canadian Minister for External Affairs, refused in Parliament yesterday to accede to a demand for cessation of all arms shipments to the Middle East on the grounds that such a policy was “dedicated to the destruction of Israel” which Canada, through the United Nations, had helped to establish. He noted that such an embargo would permit Communist arms to reach the Arab states while cutting off Israel from a weapons supply.
In reply to a query about Canada’s supplying troops for a UN force to protect Israel-Arab boundaries, Mr. Pearson indicated that the Canadian Government would give serious consideration to any request to help maintain peace in the Middle East. However, he informed the House, no such request had been made.
