The strident issue of race prejudice has again made its unwelcome appearance on the University of Wisconsin campus, for the first time in five years. On this occasion, it is in connection with a student election recently run off. Three candidates, well qualified for their posts, were defeated, and The Daily Cardinal, campus publication, has charged that the defeat of these candidates was due entirely to their being Jews.
Melvin Wunsch, managing editor of The Daily Cardinal, declared in an official statement, “There can be no doubt that if the elections had been decided purely on record and ability rather than upon racial prejudices, the results in several of the contests would have been much different.” Joseph Werner, head of the campus Y. M. C. A. organization and Mary McKechnie, president of the university Y. W. C. A. expressed regret that race prejudice had entered in the campus elections.
