The Rosh Hashanah services here were marred by the fact that Chief Rabbi Hertz took sick immediately after delivering his sermon in the Hendon Synagogue and had to be removed to his home where he remained in bed. Physicians attending him established that his health is affected chiefly by the emotional strain from which he is suffering as a result of the reports of the tortures of Jews in Nazi-held Europe.
A message of hope to the Jews in Poland and other Nazi-held territories was broadcast from here by H. A. Goodman, Agudah leader, over the European service of the British radio. “The 8,000,000 Jews in the free lands of the British Empire, the Americas and Russia send their fraternal greetings to their 8,000,000 brethren who are suffering from Nazi terror,” the message said expressing the hope that “the coming year will see the beginning of a new era of peace.”
