also recognize that minorities are suppressed and discriminated against to some degree in every land.

“But the growing interdependence of the world makes it appropriate that individuals far from Germany should express their concern about the intense anti-Jewish campaign. As different cultural and racial groups come into close contact with one another, conflict is a frequent result. There are always those who want to destroy or to render impotent those who greatly differ from them. Such an effort is likely to be an emotional and not a rational reaction, and is diametrically opposed to principles of sound statecraft.

“In our interdependent world, which many technical factors have brought upon us, with close contacts between many people and cultures, one of the central problems is how they shall live together to mutual advantage. The world is too small for persecution. Intolerance in every nation is a world concern. One of the great tasks of those possessing intelligence and goodwill is to search for the kind of relationships which will make possible a good life for cultural and racial minorities. This means the setting up of structures and methods which will prevent destructive and violent relations between nations and groups. The end to be sought is rational control through conciliation.

“A poverty-stricken world cannot afford bitter hostility and the denial of civil and religious rights. We believe that the general welfare of Germany—as of every other nation —will best be served by a friendly policy toward all honorable minorities. Richness of culture and progressiveness of spirit require a wholesome diversity within the larger unity of national life. Indeed, modern society is discovering that civilization means the increasing provision for minorities.”

Samuel Untermyer, Stanley High and Albert Abarbanel will be the speakers tonight at the Union Auditorium, 233 West 48th Street, of the International Crusade Against Hitlerism.
