The “mukhtars,” or headmen, of the Jewish settlements in Galilee have met and adopted a resolution protesting the conviction of Israel Birnbaum, mukhtar of the Jewish cooperative settlement of Hulda who was sentenced to five years imprisonment last week because arms were discovered in the colony during a police raid.
The resolution, pointing out that no evidence was produced at the trial to show that Birnbaum had arms in his possession, assailed the legal ruling under which the mukhtar of a colony is held responsible for all that occurs there. It was announced here today that the names of the seven convicted Hulda settlers have been inscribed in the Jewish National Fund’s “Golden Book.”
The 30th day following the death of Shmuel Wolynetz, a settler at the colony of Ramath Hakovesh who was killed by police during a search for arms there, was marked at Ramath Hakovesh today. Memorial services were held and a wreath was placed on his grave.
