Andrew J. May (Dem., Ky.), chairman of the House Military Affairs Committee, has introduced a bill to permit admission of refugees to Alaska in numbers equalling unfilled American immigration quotas on the ground they would aid the territory’s defense.
Asking admission of “highly-trained and desirable citizens who are refugees from foreign persecution,” the bill points out that Alaska now has a population of only 60,000 in an area of 600,000 square miles.
The present population is “now impotent to defend” the territory, the bill declares, constituting a danger to the entire continental United States. It asserts that new citizens could help to develop strategic materials.
