The Jewish community in Cuba has declined by 300 persons during the past year to a total of 2, 100, according to reports from Havana received here today, and based on registration during the past year by Cuban Jews for the distribution of matzoh and other religious needs.
Close contacts are maintained between Cuban Jews and Canadian Jewry with the Canadian Jewish Congress annually providing shipments of matzoh, for the Jews on the island. Jewish sources in Canada, Central and South America also supply Cuban Jewry with Hebrew calendars and other ritual needs.
The reports on the Jewish population of Cuba noted that 45 percent of the community are 56 years old and over; 35 percent are from 16 to 55. It is estimated that only about 17 percent of Cuban Jews are employable.
