An attack upon the Hitler policy of degrading artists in Germany was made yesterday by Deems Taylor, prominent American composer on the eve of the first anniversary of the Hitler regime.
Mr. Taylor’s statement was issued in connection with the presentation of the “Case of Civilization Against Hitlerism” on March 7, at Madison Square Garden, which is to be a factual presentation of the laws and acts of the Hitler regime.
In a telegram to the American Jewish Congress, which together with the American Federation of Labor and other liberal groups is arranging the presentation, in which he expressed regret that absence from the city prevented his personal participation, Mr. Taylor declared:
“It is hardly necessary to say I join with you in protesting against the cruel childishness of a theory of civilization that ranks an artist according to his race instead of his talent; that appraises his work according to so-called patriotic standards than artistic ones and that attempts to debase all art to the level of political propaganda. My deepest sympathy.”
