Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, made it clear yesterday at a meeting of the world Zionist executive here that he had not promised to rotate the acting chairmanship of the Jewish Agency executive in New York during his absence from the United States.
Dr. Goldmann expressed regret at a statement by Dr. Emanuel Neumann before he left Israel for the United States alleging that Dr. Goldmann had promised that the acting chairmanship of the Jewish Agency executive in New York would be rotated between Mrs. Rose Halprin and him. “The fact is,” Dr. Goldmann emphasized, “that I did not promise any rotation, but each time I leave New York, I will appoint an acting chairman at my discretion.”
At its meeting yesterday, the executive approved a plan for the housing of 20,000 immigrants in the next four months. Zalman Shragai, a member of the Jewish Agency executive, will leave for France to organize immigration, while Dr. Giora Josephthal, Agency treasurer, will leave for the United States to raise the necessary funds.
The executive, which continued its deliberations on the distribution of portfolios, also heard an announcement by Mr. Shragai that 764 new immigrants had arrived here today aboard the S.S. Jerusalem. Forty-two of the new immigrants are from Eastern Europe. A party of 267 of the new arrivals left the ship immediately for settlement on Hapoel Hamizrachi agricultural settlements Some 1,500 new immigrants who arrived in Israel Monday and yesterday were immediately taken to new settlements to celebrate their first Shavuot in the Jewish State.
