A campaign for 100,000 new members for the National Conference of Christians and Jews was launched today when Ben Duffy, chairman of the 1955 Brotherhood Week, spoke at a Veterans Day luncheon closing the 26th annual meeting of the NCCJ, held here the past three days.
“The concept of brotherhood is so much a part of our American heritage we should make it cut deep into the heart of practically everyone in this country, “he said. Duffy previewed the Brotherhood Week program telling of programs to be presented in 12, 000 school systems, thousands of parishes of churches and synagogues, at labor union meetings, at parent-teacher groups, fraternal orders, veterans groups and many other clubs and associations. President Eisenhower will be honorary chairman of Brotherhood Week.
Duffy held that the task force of responsible citizens of the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 300 cities across the country are enlisted to prevent and when necessary, “put out the fires of religious and racial antagonisms.” Duffy said “we need such task forces not in 300 cities but in 12,000 or more to truly safeguard this country against the fires of bigotry and religious and racial hatred.”
