The legislative council of Surinam, in Dutch Guiana, has approved a project for the settlement of displaced Jews in that colony, it was disclosed here today by Dr. I.N.Steinberg, secretary-general of the Freeland League for Jewish Territorial Colonization.
Dr. Steinberg said that on Jan. 28 the governor of Surinam submitted to the legislative coucil a memorandum on the proposed colonization project prepared by the Freeland League and urged that it be approved in principle so that negotiations with the League could be continued. A cable from the governor received this week invited a commission to come to Surinam and “to investigate local conditions and to discuss with this government all matters concerned.”
