How Belgians and Dutchmen are persistently defying the Nazi laws against the Jews and risking their lives to defend Jews in their countries is told in reports received here today from Amsterdam and Brussels.
In Holland, one of the reports says, Dutch workers slip into the Jewish ghetto in Amsterdam at night in order to protect the Jews there from anticipated anti-Jewish attacks. In Belgium, local non-Jews, according to complaints in pro-Nazi newspapers, have made a practice of passing Jewish children from one non-Jewish home to another each day, thus ensuring that the child will get fed.
The Brusseler Zeitung, a pro-Nazi paper reaching here today, reports that the Nazi authorities in Belgium have started the expulsion of Belgian-born Jews to occupied Russian territory. A group of 100 Jews were deported to Russia this week, the paper states. The pro-Nazi Belgian newspaper Lo Pays Reel, published in Brussels, carries an article complaining that Belgian teachers are telling their pupils that the yellow Mogen David which the Jews of Belgium must now wear is a special mark of distinction, of which Jews should be proud.
