President Eisenhower underscored at his weekly news conference today the significance of the foreign aid program now pending in Congress. He said the welfare of the nation was deeply involved in the foreign aid measure and that it would prove a profitable long term investment in terms of the national security and the use of both public and private loan funds to ensure the freedom of participating countries.
In response to a question on immigration, he said he strongly supported bills to provide asylum for refugees from communism and other extremist ideologies. He called attention to his message to Congress last January urging action on immigration laws to make them more representative of the humanitarian feelings of the American people. He noted that numerous Hungarian refugees were admitted this year and hold parole status as residents of the United States.
