Embezzlement charges were dismissed against a former bookkeeper at the Los Angeles campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. A judge dropped the charges against Jean Thorbourn because a grand jury that indicted her did not know that HUC administrators knew about the embezzlement. Thorbourn, 63, was accused last year of forging checks to embezzle more than $1 million from the HUC between 1989 and 1997.
