The current session of the General Assembly is expected to recess, possibly this week, without consideration of the Middle East question. If so, it is expected that Romania’s Foreign Minister, Corneliu Manescu, Assembly president, will announce that the Assembly will be subject to recall for possible debate on the Middle East.
The current session is officially a continuation of the 22nd regular Assembly which convened last September and recessed in December until April. Its agenda items are nearly two-thirds disposed of. The issue of Southwest Africa has been decided and the treaty on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons is expected to reach an Assembly vote this week.
The Middle East is the sole remaining undebated agenda item. It was not debated either during the September to December period or during the current series of meetings. Unless the Arab states or their Communist allies bring pressure to bear, it is not expected that there will be any more Assembly meetings until September, when the 23rd regular session is scheduled to convene.
