Gen. Ezer Weizman, leader of the Herut Party and former Air Force commander and Minister of Transport, said Friday that the government should withdraw its agreement in principle to an interim settlement with Egypt to reopen the Suez Canal because it would seriously weaken Israel militarily and politically. “If given the choice,” he said in a speech to the Engineers Club, “I would prefer more of Sinai and fewer Phantoms than more of Phantoms and less Sinai.”
