General Sir Alan Cunningham, Commander-in-Chief of military forces in Eastern England, today was named High Commissioner for Palestine, suceeding Lord Gort who resigned last week.
The new High Commissioner, who is 59 years old, was commander of the Eighth Army in Libya as successor to Sir Archibald Wavell. He was succeeded in 1942 by Gen. Neil M. Ritchie who commanded the Eighth Army for a short time until Gen. Montgomery took over. Since 1942, Gen. Cunningham has been stationed in Ireland and Britain.
