Georgia Women Voters Condemn Racial, Religious Election Bias

The League of Women Voters of Georgia has issued an appeal to "political leaders and candidates for public offices to see that their political campaigns are free from appeals to racial or religious bias." The appeal followed injection of the religious issue in the Congressional race here, when one candidate made a bid for support on the grounds that his opponent, a Jew, represented the "Jewish minority."

The Southern Israelite, of Atlanta, in an editorial welcoming the stand taken by the League of Women Voters, commented that "political and racial prejudice have no place in our way of life. They are un-democratic, anti-social and anathema to the principles of decency and fair play. That one candidate has seen fit to call attention to the Jewishness of his opponent in Fulton Country, is a matter of grave import and deserves round condemnation," the editorial added.
