The West-German Government will make a new reparations proposal to Israel, it was learned here today following a meeting last night between Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Prof. Franz Boehm, who resigned as head of the German delegation to the reparations talks in protest against Germany’s “insincerity” toward Israel’s claim.
Also present at the meeting was Dr. Hermann Abs, head of the German delegation to the London international conference on German pre-war debts. Dr. Abs reported that he had met with Israeli representatives in London and that they had said they would resume the reparations talks at The Hague if a concrete German offer were forthcoming.
Dr. Abs later told newsmen that Prof. Boehm had agreed to withdraw his resignation. However, Prof. Boehm said he had not withdrawn the resignation, but merely wanted to wait several days until the government announces its new proposal. He would then see whether he could support the proposal, he stated.
A plea that Germany should at least make material restitution to the Jews for the property stolen from them since it cannot make up for the moral wrongs inflicted on them, was voiced by the President of the City of Bremen Senate, Wilhelm Kaisen, at a ceremony consecrating a memorial to the Jews of this city who died at the hands of the Nazis. Before the Hitler regime, the Jews of this city numbered about 2,000. Now there are only 100 Jews there. Of the 400 families living in the city before 1933 not a single child survived.
