The West German Government has made new preliminary proposals which may offer a basis for the resumption of the Israel-German reparations talks, it was indicated here last night by Dr. George Josephthal, chief Israeli delegate who was summoned home to report to the government. The proposals were made to members of the Israeli delegation in Paris.
Dr. Josephthal said that Israel is now awaiting an official proposal. The Israeli delegation, he declared, is prepared to accept the general framework of the new German offer, but not its particulars. He refused to disclose what these particulars were, but expressed the opinion that the serious stage in the reparations talks has been passed, although not all aspects of the crisis have been ironed out.
Dr. Josephthal denied reports in the press here that Dr. Nahum Goldmann was planning to meet German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. He said that Dr. Goldmann received no letter from Chancellor Adenauer. Commenting on the resignation of Dr. Franz Boehm, head of the German delegation at the reparations talks at the Hague. Dr. Josephthal said that Prof. Boehm’s courage deserves the highest commendation.
