Jewish quarters here are discussing with the Greek Foreign Office the question of releasing the S.S. Tampa which anchored over the weekend at the Crete port of Heraklion to take on fuel and has reportedly been detained by local port authorities.
The Greek port officials are said to have claimed the right to search the ship–carrying more than 500 Israel-bound Jewish passengers — on the ground that they are checking to see if there are any men of military age aboard. The Jewish leaders here object to the search on the grounds that the Tampa made a casual call at the Greek port and the harbor officials are not entitled to search the vessel.
