And in the end one comes to the conclusion that Jewish haste is not only a by now ineradicable characteristic of the race, but that in that trait one finds really the expression of Jewish destiny. This quickness of mind—may it not be the quickening leaven which historically the Jew has to be among the nations, not because he wants to but because this role was forced upon him from the beginning of his pilgrimage through the centuries.

Ahasver, the wandering Jew, can never find peace or rest, but in his restlessness he is perhaps a witness to the power and the continuity of the human mind.
