The steamship “President Fillmore”, which sailed this week for the Far East, is carrying on board a Sefer Torah, or Scroll of the Law. It is the first Sefer Torah ever sent to Honolulu and has been sent by the United Synagogue of America.
Last Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Honolulu Lodge of the B’nai B’rith held services for the first time in Hawaiia, but it still lacked a Sepher Torah. The Lodge thereupon conducted a campaign for funds for the purchase of a Sefer Torah and these funds were remitted to the United Synagogue of America. The amount collected, however, was too small to purchase a Sefer Torah, and so the difference was supplied by members of the United Synagogue.
