Fifteen hundred delegates of more than 800 fraternal, social, religious and labor organizations in the Metropolitan Area, voiced their solemn and bitter condemnation of the Nazi slaughter of the Jewish populations in the conquered lands, and pledged their energetic participation in the “Rescue Program” of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society of America, at the 13th annual convention of the HIAS Council of Organizations, today.
The resolution condemning the Hitler slaughters urged the Government of the United States and the United Nations “to issue public warning to the effect that all criminals who are involved in these gruesome slaughters of innocent men, women and children and all members of the Nazi and Fascist parties in Germany and Italy will be personally held responsible for the execution of the murderous plans.” Simultaneously, the convention voted a wider program of financial cooperation with the “Rescue Through Emigration” work of HIAS in order to expedite the rescue of those refugees from the Hitler terror who escaped to neutral countries.
The convention also adopted a special resolution of “Appreciation and Gratitude” to President Roosevelt, expressing the hope that after the war the influence of the United States will be brought to bear ” so that full justice is done to the victims of Hitlerism including the Jewish victims who shall be guaranteed freedom and equality as well as the right to rebuild Palestine as the National Home of the Jewish people.”
