The savage attack upon the Jews made by Adolf Hitler in his proclamation read this morning to the convention of the National Socialist (Nazi) party in Nuremberg, came as a great shock to the Jews of Germany who had cherished the hope that in Hitler lay the solution of the Jewish issue on the basis of the chancellor’s abstention from anti-Semitic remarks in all of his public speeches since he came to power.
His declaration today, however, made up for his long silence on the subject of the Jews and by its violent tone and language, effectually smashed any illusions that the Jews in Germany would find the chancellor a refuge from extremist Nazis such as Goebbels, Goering, Rosenberg and Streicher, the boycott organizer.
the proclamation did not refer to foreign affairs, as expected, but after a recapitulation of the evils of “marxist” rule, characterized the Jews with the quotation from the German historian Mommsen, that Jews are “the ferment of decomposition in a nation’s life.”
“In view of the international affiliations of the Jews and the particular danger to Germany from this,” stated his proclamation, “we must more than ever, eliminate this spirit of disbelief, incarnate in the Jews, from among our people. The Nazis are determined to continue the bitter fight against the poisoners of the German people until they are entirely destroyed.”
