One of the most significant episodes of European history and particularly Jewish history will reach the motion picture screen when “The House of Rothschild,” a 20th Century production, opens at the Astor Theatre on Wednesday evening, March 14. George Arliss is starred.
The plot of “The House of Rothschild” centers largely about the most famous episode in the history of the Rothschilds, the part played by the family in the world-shaking events of Napoleon’s last hundred days in Europe, leading up to his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.
In the film George Arliss plays the part of Nathan Rothschild. It was Arliss who suggested to Joseph M. Schenck and Darryl F. Zanuck of 20th Centry Pictures that the fortunes of this famous Jewish family would make a motion picture far out of the ordinary.
Mr. Arliss is supported by Boris Karloff, Loretta Young, Robert Young, C. Aubrey Smith and others. Miss Arliss appears as Mrs. Nathan Rothschild. The picture was directed by Alfred Merker, a tale by Nunnally Johnson.
