The Hungarian political police are reported to be investigating the activities of the Nazi-organized and Nazi-controlled "Jewish Council" which was the only legal central Jewish organization during the German occupation. The members of the council, all of whom were Jews, have been charged with saving rich Jews who could pay huge sums to guarantee their safety, and allowing poor Jews to be deported or murdered.

Emil Kovarc, chief of the Fascist militia during the rule of the last puppet premier Ferenc Szalasi, is being tried here for organizing persecution of Jews and for directing the coup d’etat which brought Szalasi to power. Kovarc, who told the court that he regretted that Nazism had not been victorious, was responsible for the bombing of the largest synagogue in Budapest and for ferreting out hidden Jews and looting Jewish homes.
