The government bill contemplating limitations to be imposed on “undesirable elements” who would purchase land came up in the Senate several days ago. The measure has distinct anti-Jewish characteristics.
Minister of Agriculture Mayer, in defending the bill, stated that paragraph 7, which is described as an anti-Jewish measure is aimed only against the influx of Eastern Jews, particularly from Galicia, but will not affect assimilated Hungarian Jews.
Count Hadik, opposing the measure, stated that the government would do better to introduce a stronger control of aliens than a control on the purchase of land. This remark called forth the statement of the Prime Minister, Count Bethlen, that the government is doing everything within its power to curtail the number of aliens permitted to stay in the country. During the recent alien raids in Upper Hungary, about 2.000 Galicians who had no right to stay in the country were apprehended, he stated.
