Maj. Gen Walter A. Wood, Jr., of the Washington office of the Preparatory Commission for the International Refugee Organization, today asked the Austrian Government to publish a statement guaranteeing against discrimination all displaced Jews forced to accept employment in the Austrian economy under a recent ruling by the U.S. Army that all DP’s will become self-sufficient or give up their DP status.

The I.R.O. official specifically requested that the government guarantee that the Jews would not be singled out in the application of the general employment order and that the government guarantee that Jews will not be forced to work for anti-Semitic employers. He also requested that skilled workers be given priority in placement. It was pointed out here that the majority of the Jews in the camps in the U.S. zone have trades and skills which are not in demand in the Austrian economy.
