The necessity for some improvement in the financial condition of the Jews in Rumania, thousands of whom have been rendered penniless as a result of regulations ousting them from a large section of the economic life of the country was emphasized by M. Benvenisti, president of the Zionist Organization of Rumania, during an interview with Radu Lecca, Minister for Jewish Affairs, it was learned here today.
During a lengthy conference with Lecca, the Zionist leader discussed all aspects of the treatment of Rumanian Jewry and insisted that the Jews must be granted certain civic and economic rights. The financial situation of the Jewish population has been greatly aggravated by the imposition of the 4,000,000,000 lei special “Jewish tax.”
Deportations of Rumanian Jews to Transnistria, meanwhile, are continuing, the report indicates. Many Jews from the city of Harlu were recently sent there as were Jews from a number of other towns in Rumania proper. The Banat district is the only section in which Jews are unmolested to a large extent, the report says.
