Pointedly disclaiming India’s “right to pose as mediator” between the Arab-states and Israel, V.K. Krishna Menon, chairman of India’s delegation here, asserted today that, despite the fact that there have been “skirmishes” in the Middle East, he still thinks that “there will be no war there.” He spoke at a luncheon tendered him by the United Nations Correspondents Association.
“The Arab-Israel issue,” he said, “is in the hands of the United Nations. The Security Council has been seized of the Palestine question for a long time. Unless circumstances warrant, we have no right to pose as mediators, even if we are competent. True, there have been skirmishes in the Middle East,” he continued, “but personally I think that open war will not be permitted to develop by either side or by world opinion. Neither side wants to sacrifice world opinion through violent war. I hope the issues will be settled.”
