Israel Ambassador Abba Ehan presented Henry Byroade, State Department Director of German Affairs, with a detailed aide memoire which urged the settlement of Israelis claim for restitution from Germany. Mr. Eban emphasized that the moral grounds of Israel’s claims have been generally conceded.
The Ambassador said he pointed out the practical possibility of repayment. The improvement in Germany’s economic status and exports, indicated by a higher standard of living in Germany than exists in Israel, should create a better chance for Germany to meet its obligations, Mr. Eban declared, adding that it was intolerable that the perpetrators of crimes against Jewry should make less sacrifices than the victims.
