The Israel Government will not address formal invitations to foreign diplomats assigned to this country to attend this year’s Independence Day parade and ceremonies in this city, it was learned today.

The government hopes thus to avoid embarrassment to envoys whose governments do not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. On instructions from London, the British Ambassador here headed a campaign among the diplomatic corps to boycott functions in Jerusalem so as not to accord recognition to the city’s status. However, a large number of diplomats are expected to attend the Independence Day exercises here in a personal capacity.

(The New York Times reported today from Jerusalem that an official of the United States Embassy in Tel Aviv said that U.S. Ambassador Edward B. Lawson will not be present at the Jerusalem ceremonies. President Eisenhower has named Mr. Lawson official representative of the United States at the anniversary celebrations. But the embassy official said this would not change Mr. Lawson’s plans.)
