Israel protested to West Germany yesterday over a decision by Bonn postal authorities not to accept parcels weighing over three-and-a-half ounces for air mail delivery to Israel. The decision stemmed from security measures taken after mid-air explosions destroyed an Israel-bound Swissair jet and damaged an Austrian Airlines jet over Munich last February. Ephraim Haran, director of the Foreign Ministry’s economic department lodged the protest with the economic counsellor of the West German Embassy. The latter said the decision was an interim one pending the installation of necessary safety devices to detect explosives in the mail. Mr. Haran observed that West Germany was the only county still restricting air mail deliveries to Israel. He said there was no justification for the long delay in installing safety devices.
