The Israel Supreme Court annulled today the recent election of Rabbi Itzhak Nissim as Chief Rabbi of the Sephardi Community of Israel. The complaint had been brought by a private citizen who charged irregularities in the elections.
The government began urgent preparations today on a bill to retroactively validate the elections and return Rabbi Nissim to the post. In a statement on the Supreme Court’s action, Deputy Minister of Religion Dr. Zorach Warhaftig expressed regret at the decision and pledged that the government would do everything possible to have Rabbi Nissim’s election confirmed.
